Birds encountered in the Hortobagy National Park        

    Little Grebe  Tachybaptus ruficollis                    2 sightings only for the trip. 
    Great Crested Grebe  Podiceps cristatus            Small numbers seen on the Hortobagy.
    Black-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena              Good views of small numbers.
    Cormorant  Phalacrocorax carbo                          Birds common. 
    Pigmy Cormorant  Phalacrocorax pygmeus             3 seen flying & 5 birds seen loafing.
               
    Bittern  Botaurus stellaris                                   Very good views of birds flying at 5 Locations.
    Little Bittern  Ixobrychus minutus                       Fleeting glimpse of 1 bird flying over reed beds.
    Night Heron  Nycticorax nycticorax                    Birds very common dozens seen every day.
    Squacco Heron  Ardeola ralloides                        Another very common heron .
    Little Egret  Egretta garzetta                             Small numbers seen at all suitable locations. 
    Great White Egret  Egretta alba                        The most common egret of the region. 
    Grey Heron  Ardea cinerea                                  Not as common as was expected.
               
    Purple Heron  Ardea purpurea                              Dozens seen every day.
    Glossy Ibis  Plegadis falcinellus                            Small numbers seen on 7th day.
    Spoonbill  Platalea leucorodia                                Fair numbers, 11 birds the biggest flock. 
    Mute Swan  Cygnus olor                                       Rare in the Hortobagy 1st breeding record 2000. 
    Greylag Goose  Anser anser                                  Common as a breeding bird.
    Red-breasted Goose  Branra ruficollis                 Bird seen with a small number of Greylags.
    Gadwall  Anas strepera                                         Small numbers seen on most days. 
    Teal  Anas crecca                                                 Small numbers seen most days.
    Mallard  Anas platyrhynchos                                  The most common duck of the region. 
    Garganey Anas querquedula                                   Good numbers seen most days 
               
    Shoveler  Anas clypeata                                        Singletons seen at a few locations.
    Red-crested Pochard  Netta rufina                      1 male seen 8th day. 
    Pochard  Aythya ferina                                         Probably on a par with Garganey. 
               
    Ferruginous Duck  Aythya nyroca                          Small numbers at all suitable habitats.
    Tufted Duck  Aythya fuligula                                7 birds seen on 6th day only.
    Black Kite  Milvus migrans                                     Only 2 birds encountered; 1 on day 5 & 1 on day 7.
    Marsh Harrier  Circus aeruginosus                         By far the most common harrier of the area. 
    Montagu’s Harrier  Circus pygargus                       Only 2 males encountered during trip. 
    Long-legged Buzzard  Buteo rufinus                      1 adult bird seen on the 6th day. 
    Red-footed Falcon  Falco vespertinus                    The most common falcon of the area.
    Saker  Falco cherrug                                             Seen on 2 occasions 1 at nest & 2 birds on pylons.
    Moorhen  Gallinula chloropus                                  Small numbers of birds at all suitable locations.
    Coot  Fulica atra                                                    Same status as moorhen. 
    Common Crane  Grus grus                                       Good numbers remaining on the Hortobagy. 
    Great Bustard  Otis tarda                                     3 adult males seen on the plains. 
    Black-winged Stilt  Himantopus himantopus             Small numbers of birds seen. 
    Avocet  Recurvirostra avosseta                               A fair number of birds breeding. 
    Stone Curlew  Birhinus oedicnemis                           A couple of birds seen at selective sites.
    Collared Pratincole  Glareola pratincola                   2 singletons seen on day 6.
    Ringed Plover  Charadrius hiaticula                          Small numbers seen on days 5 & 6.
    Grey Plover  Pluvialis squatarola                              1 adult in breeding plumage plus 1 Juv.
    Lapwing  Vanellus vanellus                                       A very common breeding wader.
    Little Stint  Calidris minuta                                    A party of 9 birds seen on day 6.
    Dunlin  Calidris alpina                                              Small numbers of birds seen on 3 occasions. 
    Ruff  Philomachus pugnax                                         2 single reeves seen on days 6 & 7.
    Snipe  Gallinago gallinago                                         1 bird seen flying over Hortobagy.
               
    Black-tailed Godwit  Limosa lapponica                      Fair numbers of birds in breeding plumage.
    Redshank  Tringa tetanus                                         Small numbers encountered. 
    Wood Sandpiper  Tringa glateola                              Singletons encountered at the fishponds. 
    Black-headed Gull  Larus ridibundus                         Good numbers at suitable sites.
    Yellow-legged Gull  Larus cachinnans                         Same status as previous birds.
    Common Tern  Sterna Hirundo                                  Small numbers encountered. 
               
    Whiskered Tern  Chlidonias hybridus                       Very common on the Hortobagy.
    
    Black Tern  Chlidonias niger                                     The least common of the marsh terns.            
    White-winged Black Tern  Chlidonias leucopterus     Almost as prolific as Whiskered. 
    Little Owl  Athene noctua                                         2 singletons seen on 6th & 7th days.
    Roller  Coracias garrulous                                          Single birds seen on overhead cables.
    Hoopoe  Upupa epops                                                 3 sightings only of single birds.
               
    Syrian Woodpecker  Dendrocopos syriacus                 Birds nesting adjacent to hotel.
    Sand Martin  Riparia riparia                                      Small numbers of birds seen on days 4, 5 & 6.
    Yellow Wagtail  Motacilla flava                                  Good numbers of birds, mainly blue-headed. 
    Bluethroat  Luscinia svecica                                        Both sightings were of the white-spot race. 
    Grasshopper Warbler  Locustella naevia                     2 singing males observed on day 6.
    Savi’s Warbler  Locustella luscinioides                        Singing birds seen at 2 locations.
               
    Aquatic Warbler  Acrocephalus paludicola                   Poor views of 1 singing male.
    Sedge Warbler  Acrocephalus schoenobaenus               Fair numbers of singing birds .
    Marsh Warbler  Acrocephalus palustris                       Birds were observed on 2 occasions. 
               
    Great Reed Warbler  Acrocephalus arundinaceus         Several singing birds observed.
               
    Icterine Warbler  Hippolais icterina                            Good views of singing birds.            
    Lesser Whitethroat  Sylvia curruca                             3 singing birds during latter part of the week.
    Goldcrest  Regulus regulus                                            Only one bird seen, outside the hotel.
               
    Lesser Grey Shrike  Lanius minor                                 Common bird for the Hortobagy.
